DENTAL IMPLANTS
Beachwood Family Dental is pleased to offer dental implants to our patients. Dental implants are an excellent solution to missing teeth. They can be used to replace one or more teeth, and are stable and long-lasting.
Dental implants comprise of three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the implant restoration. The implant post is best described as an artificial “root” of a replacement tooth. Made out of titanium, it is fused to the jawbone to provide proper structure and support for the restoration. The “abutment” is a connector that goes between the implant and the restoration, helping us attach a restoration into the implant. The implant restoration is the “crown,” or top, of the tooth, and mimics a real tooth. The restoration itself is custom made to match your smile and can be used with the same utility as a normal tooth.
Dental implants will require multiple dental appointments to our office. Our dentist will discuss your treatment plan with you as you progress through the stages of the implant process to monitor your oral health throughout. We invite you to ask questions before, during and after treatments so you can stay informed about your care.
If you would like more details about dental implants, give our office a call and schedule a consultation with our team. We look forward to your visit!
FAQs:
What are the benefits of an implant over other tooth replacement options?
A dental implant is the next best thing to a natural tooth. The implant post that is integrated into the jawbone helps keep the bone from shrinking or “resorbing”. Bone resorption can destabilize adjacent teeth. Having an implant placed soon after you have lost a tooth helps prevent too much bone resorption.
The only disadvantage of an implant is the time — it can take 3-5 months before you have a tooth back in place. However, there are options your dentist can discuss with you to place a “temporary” tooth in the site while we wait for the implant to integrate. Just let us know what your needs are and we will find a solution!
Do implants hurt?
Having an implant placed is actually not very painful. The procedure requires minimal anesthetic and is usually very quick, and much quieter than having fillings! Most patients report minimal soreness right after implant placement.
Can anyone get an implant?
There are a few health conditions that can make it trickier to have an implant placed, such as taking IV bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, chronic diabetes, or other conditions that affect healing. Some patients may have excessive bone recession or low sinuses that may indicate the need for bone grafting and/or sinus lifts. These may be done a few months before an implant is placed to prepare the site, or during implant placement. Your dentist can help you determine if any of these situations apply.
How long do implants last?
Of course nothing can last forever, and dental implants are no exception. However, studies have shown that implants can last at least 5 years, and up to 20 years or more, especially if patients maintain excellent oral hygiene!
