CROWNS AND BRIDGES
Dental crowns are used when cavities caused by dental decay are too severe to be repaired by traditional dental fillings, or when a large piece of the tooth is broken or has a deep crack. They “cap” the teeth after they have been cleared of dental decay and cover the healthy parts of the teeth to retain as much of the natural structure as possible. They are custom fitted to match your bite and are typically made of porcelain to blend in with the rest of your smile.
Dental bridges are a dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. This long-lasting restoration is permanently fixed in place using cement to fill a space left by a missing tooth. Tailored to each patient’s needs, dental bridges help create a more uniform appearance and restore the utility of the mouth and smile. Dental bridges involve preparing the teeth to either side of the space, or “drilling” them down in a conservative manner. Bridges are a great option if one or more of the teeth to either side need a crown to repair damage, or if implants are not an option in the area. They are also a faster option to replace a missing tooth verses an implant, often only taking 2-3 weeks between the initial appointment and the cementation appointment.
FAQs:
Are bridges less invasive than implants?
Not necessarily. They are less “invasive” in the sense that we are not placing anything directly into the jawbone, but as they involve drilling on the adjacent teeth, this can be less ideal. If one or more of the adjacent teeth are completely healthy, it can do more harm to place a bridge on those teeth as this can make them slightly more vulnerable.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
Of course nothing can last forever, and dental crowns and bridges are no exception. However, studies have shown that a well-maintained crown will last approximately 5 years, and frequently we see them survive 20+ years, especially in patients with excellent oral hygiene. Make sure to speak with your dentist or hygienist about proper care around crowns and bridges!
